  6. granted an earldom in 1189. On King John's
  7. death he was appointed guardian of the future
  8. Henry III, and defeated the French under
  9. Louis VIII to enable Henry to gain the
  10. throne. He grew up as a squire in Normandy
  11. and became tutor in 1170 to Henry, son of
  12. Henry II of England. William's life was a
  13. model of chivalric loyalty, serving four
  14. successive kings of England.
